AUDUBONS WARBLER (Dendroica auduboni.) V;. Life-size. C0PVIII6HT TSO), 8T I WARBLERS 393 largest and commonest of the family. It occurs chieflyeast of the Mississippi River, and is represented on thePacific Coast by an Alpine form known as the Audubonswarbler. While the myrtle warblers differ decidedly inplumage, either sex may be identified by the bright yellowpatch at the base of the tail feathers. This is clearly dis-tinguishable when the bird flies or moves about through thebrush. Like most of our warblers, the myrtle is a migrantin the Great Lakes region, arriving ahead of most insectiv-orous birds, even before the foliage is out. While there areno records of myrtle warblers breeding in the UnitedStates, strangely enough, this bird has been found breedingin Jamaica, West Indies. The birds show a decided preference for coniferoustrees, and may be found nesting in cedar and hemlock for-ests in company with magnolia, Blackburnian, and black-polled warblers.
