flies, many of which are caught on the wing, and smallfruits. PILEATED WOODPECKER The range of this noble bird was formerly the wholewooded region of North America. If the * curse of beauty be added to that of large size, the destruction of a bird is foredoomed. This magnificentblack woodpecker, once common throughout the heavily tim-bered areas, has almost disappeared before the industriousaxe and the all-conquering gun, and the day of the passingof the logcock, or lumberjack, is not far distant. In the spring of 1902, according to Mr. Sim, of Jeffer-son, Ohio, a pair of these birds nested within a mile of town. The nesting cavity was dug by the middle of April, in abeech tree, at a height of about thirty feet. Chips werestrewn liberally over the ground below, and many showedcharacteristic chisel marks of the birds powerful bill. Dur-ing the nesting season the birds remained near, drumming, calling, and feeding. The flight, unhke that of other wood-peckers, is direct and not undulating.

I have heard this woodpecker give three vocal songsor calls. One is an exultant, ringing laugh; at a distancethis call sounds metallic, but when at close range it is themost untamably wild sound that I know among the bird-notes. Another call might be suggested by the syllablescow-cow-cow repeated indefinitely, but sometimes inter-mittently, resembling the flickers call. When two birdsapproach each other they often carry on a wheedling con-versation, analogous to the Wichew note of the flicker, butit is so given as to lead one to believe that the birds havetheir bills closed while making the sound. In its search for food the logcock strikes deliberately, but with force, often giving the head a powerful twist towrench off a pi
