A number ofstomachs were taken from birds killed when the groundwas covered with snow, but even these contained a largepercentage of insects, showing the birds skill in findingproper food under adverse circumstances. Grasshoppersseem to be the natural food. More than half of the meadowlarks food consists ofharmful insects. Its vegetable food is composed either ofobnoxious weeds or waste grain. The strong point in thebirds favor is that, although naturally an insect-eater, itis able to subsist on vegetable food, and consequently is notforced to migrate in cold weather farther than is necessaryto find the ground free from snow. It should never beregarded as a game bird, nor is it right that these usefulbirds be protected in the North only to furnish Southernpot-pies. So closely do these birds guard the contents of theirnests that the farmers mower frequently passes over thehidden treasures without fatal results to the close-sittingparent. They gather in migrating flocks in fall.
