femalewhich survived six years in an aviary, laying several eggs,though kept singly, was fed on canary seed, maize, a Httlesugar, raw beef, and carrots. Like all the parrot family, these lories breed in hollowboughs, where the female deposits from three to four whiteeggs, upon which she sits for twenty-one days. The youngfrom the first resemble their parents closely, but are atrifle less brilliantly colored. They are very active and graceful, but have an abom-inable shriek. The noise is said to be nearly as disagreeableas the plumage is beautiful. They are very quarrelsomeand have to be kept apart from the other parrots, whichthey will kill. The feathers of the head and neck are longand very narrow and lie closely together; the claws arestrong and hooked, indicating their tree-climbing habits. THE COCK-OF-THE-ROCK* The Cock-of-the-rock lives in Guiana. Its nest isfound among the rocks. The eggs are described as pale buff, with various-sizedspots of shades from red-brown to pale lilac.

Robert Schomburgh describes its dance as follows: While traversing the mountains of western Guiana wefell in with a pack of these splendid birds, which gave methe opportunity of being an eye-witness of their dancing,an accomplishment which I had hitherto regarded as afable. We cautiously approached their ballet ground andplace of meeting, which lay some little distance from theroad. The stage, if we may so call it, measured from fourto five feet in diameter; every blade of grass had beenremoved and the ground was as smooth as if leveled byhuman hands. On this space we saw one of the birdsdance and jump about, while the others evidently playedthe part of admiring spectators.
