would not care to venture invery far, among the vast amount of ma-chinery, with its rapidly moving wheelsand belts. Do you not think it would be wonderfulto see how quickly the boards, laths, and 98 NATURE IN STORY AND VERSE. other materials for building, were turnedout? Some friends once took me to visita pine forest in Connecticut. The trees were stately, tall and of suchgreat circumference that they seemed tohave flourished for ages. Their fragrance was delightful, and thesinging of the pines we had read about, now became real to us. Near the edge of this pine forest, therewas a camp meeting, which met every sum-mer. The little cottages nestled beneath thetrees, making a pretty scene, as the statelymonarchs of the forest towered abovethem, as if to protect them. It was a beautiful sight, and left a men-tal picture never to be forgotten. The old pines seemed to sing to us:We know much about this country, andabout the world, for we have been here agreat many years. PART THREE SPRING /

Looking for the first Bluebird NATURE IN STORY AND VERSE. 101 Spring Is Coming Spring is coming, dont you know ?For a Robin told me so!And a Blue Bird, blithe and gay,Threw his song across the way,Just to greet the little brook,And the violets in their nook. Sleeping flowers will wake and grow,For the Robin told me so.Now the sound of hoops we hearAnd bright tops are spinning near,Jumping ropes are all the go,Boys and girls are glad, we know. The Easter Talk A beautiful Sunday is coming—calledEaster Sunday. This day conies at the time of year whenall is changing. The old is being madenew, and how happy every one is. When Nature gives up the ice and snow, the trees give up their long sleep, the seeds 102 NATURE IN STORY AND VERSE. burst into new life, and butterflies comeforth from their dead appearing cocoons. Everything seems to be proclaiming thatdeath is life and God is good/ The flowers say, For a long time, weslept in seeds and bulbs, but we now comeout into the bright, warm sun
