the ground curious drawings in connec-tion with ceremonies. These earth drawings, or sandpaintings,* or sand Mosaics, as they are some-times called, are often surprisingly elaborate. Onthe whole there are few places where the work-ings of primitive religion can be as satisfactorilyobserved as among these Southwestern pueblos. The Southwest is now in large part fairly acces-sible. To visit some of the hunter tribes, for ex-ample some of the Apache groups, a long journey onhorseback is necessary. Several of the pueblos, however, such as Isleta and Laguna, can be seenfrom the car windows on the Santa Fe railway. Some of the cliff-dwellings, even, which were lo-cated originally in remote and inaccessible places, can now be visited with comparatively little trouble. The extremely interesting Mesa Verde region, whichcontains some of the most famous cliff ruins, is 190 Ethnology of the Pacific Coasteasily reached from the branch of the Denver &Rio Grande railroad passing through Durango and

The largest ofthese ruins, the Cliff Palace and Spruce Tree House, 191 Ethnology of the Pacific Coasthave been cleared of debris and most painstakinglyrepaired by the National Government for the sakeof tourists and visitors. Dr. Dorseys remarkablelittle book, Indians of the Southwest, gives completeinstructions for reaching everv place of interest,Indian tribes, pueblos, and ancient ruins. (See fig.18.) The Indians of California, while on the wholein a much ruder state than the Southwesternpeoples, nevertheless have some very interesting in-stitutions. The art of pottery, for example, somehowor other passed over the waterless Mohave desertwest of the pueblo Indians, and is common in thatpart of California south of Tehachapi Pass. Thisart, though it is very ancient in the Southwest, seems to have been derived ultimatelj^ from OldMexico. It is rather curious that certain elementsof the highest Pueblo culture, such as potterj^,should have spread
