n, then justfounded in Paris, were due the abolition of the rulewhich required that all visitors should be provided witha fellows order^ and the policy of admitting the publicon Mondays, and children at any time for sixpence each.On Mr. Mitchells retirement, Dr. Philip Lutley Sclaterwas elected to the post of secretary, which he held until1901. During the lengthy period that he held officemany changes were effected in the gardens, the mostimportant being the erection of the Antelope House office of secretary for a short period, but at the followingannual meeting, on a vote of the fellows, the presentsecretary, Dr. P. Chalmers Mitchell, was elected to thepost. Just prior to the retirement of Dr. Sclater somedissatisfaction had been expressed by a number offellows with the housing conditions in the gardens, andthe new secretary was soon at work, carrying outvarious improvements which gave immediate satisfac-tion to the fellows and public.
