In pursuance ofthese objects, tJie commissioners instructed iVlr. James T.Gardiner, directorof the State Survey, to make an examina-tion of the premises, and prepare for their consideration aproject. He was assisted in this work by Wr. FrederickLaw Olmsted, the distinguished landscape-architect. The examination showed that the destruction of thenatural scenery which forms the framework of the Fallswas rapidly progressing : unsightly structures and millswere taking the place of the beautiful woods that onceoverhung the rapids ; the fine piece of primeval forest re-maining on Goat Island was in jeopardy from projects looking to making a showgiound of the island ; and everypoint from which the Falls could be seen on the Americanside
