degree of interest inthe work of an artist who looks at nature in anindividual manner than in the productions, how-ever skilful they may be, of a man who follows thetraditions of a school and allows himself to beguided by set conventions rather than by hispersonal impressions. The individual observer, ifhe sees acutely and is sincerely anxious to recordintelligently what he sees, adds something worthpossessing to the sum-total of the art of thecountry in which he lives; and, if his powers areequal to his intentions, he may well become aninfluence in many other parts of the world. Evenif he is not a commanding genius he is to becounted as important, for his originality is in-spiring and incites other men to study nature forthemselves and to aim at independence in expres-sion. In one way or another he becomes a leader,setting an example by which those who come afterhim can profit, and enlarging the scope of the artto which he devotes himself.
