Summary

[edit]
Description

It is my second and final day in the area.

Carlsbad Caverns were known for the bat population. Its droppings, guano, were mined and sold by locals for profit. And this is the natural entrance used by the bats and the miners.

Eventually more of the main cavern was explored, revealing a huge Throne Room 850 feet below, able to fit several football fields. The cavern was also developed with tourist infrastructure as well.

Early visitors had to walk down to the Throne Room and walk back up; I only need to walk down, as elevators will bring me back up.

Carlsbad Caverns (note that it is plural) National Park also has several additional caverns in its grounds. Some of them are partly to mostly unexplored. Helmets-and-lanterns tours allow access to such additional caverns as well as remote parts of the main cavern, but my time constraints would prevent me from touring them.

I would return here for Thanksgiving 2006, and again, time constraints (plus my mother alongside me) prevented me from tackling those additional tours.
