DescriptionNativity of the Mother of God (St. Mary's) Ukrainian Catholic Church 1916.jpg |
St. Mary's was founded as the Ukrainian Catholic Church Parish in 1901 about two miles east of Chipman, and a split occurred within the congregation in 1915. This three domed Byzantine style church was constructed for those who were committed to remain Ukrainian Catholic. The Iconostasis was built by Phillip Pawliuk of Lamont in 1922, and painted by Peter Lipinski, (1888-1975) Peter Lipinski was probably the most prolific church artist in Alberta, having painted nearly 50 churches during his lifetime. In 1928, he painted the iconostasis, as well as adorning the church with a wealth of religious pictures, and traditional borders. He adorned the dome with angels and brilliant stars and today only the angels endure unaltered, as the stars had faded, and have been repainted. |
