Description

The NARA title "Native Church, Metlakatla, Alaska, 1908" is a misidentification, most likely a switch of images with NARA 297837. The church (completed 1896) does not appear in this photograph, which is a distant view of Metlakatla centered on Duncan's Cannery. This photo is the mate of File:Yellow Hill (Section of Metlakahtla) Before the church was built. (M.A.M., Feb. 1926) - NARA - 297379.jpg (note the rowboat) they combine nicely without scale adjustment to make a panorama. This photo, like that one, has a very sharp, high-resolution image of waterfront buildings in Metlakatla. The tree bandstand is still present. A building which may be Duncan's second sawmill is present to the left of the cannery and there is no construction on the next point where the third sawmill was located.

  • Scope and content: Front view of the church
Date NARA dates this 1908 but that is probably due to the above-mentioned image switch. Presence of the Cannery and absence of the church suggests 1891-4
