Secretary of the Treasury under Presi-dent Jackson and later Chief Justice of the United StatesSupreme Court. From the peaceful shades of Terra Rubra young Key wassent to St. Johns College, Annapolis. The quaint town,around which centered the brilliant life of the Capital of theState, was a wonderful change for the impressionable boy. Dr.Upton Scott, his fathers and uncles neighbor in Frederick County, had built historic Carvel House, on Shipwright Street,and here the boy lived, with frequent visits to his grandfather,Francis Key, at his estate, Belvoir, on the Severn River. Graduating with high honors, Francis Scott Key, with hisfellow-student, Roger Brooke Taney, read law in the officeof Jeremiah Townley Chase. Meantime he fell in love withMary Tayloe Lloyd, daughter of Edward Lloyd IV ofWye House, Talbot County. They were married at Annapolis by Rev. Ralph Higgin-botham, rector of St. Annes Parish. Like the date of hisbirth, there is a discrepancy of a year in the two dates men- 39

It is usually given as occurring in 1802.In May, 1855, Mrs. Mary Tayloe Key, the widow, appliedto the Pension Office at Washington for bounty land on accountof her husbands service in the War of 1812, and stated underoath that she was married to F. S. Key at Annapolis, Mary-land, January 19, 1801. Eleven children were born of thismarriage. The year of his marriage Francis Scott Key began practic-ing law in Frederick County. Later he removed to George-town, D. C, where he formed an association in the practicewith his uncle, Philip Barton Key. He was three times ap-pointed United States District Attorney for the District ofColumbia, which office he held from 1833 to 1841. Key was a devout Christian. In the Sunday School he taughta Bible class of young men for many years. He was one ofthe vestrymen of St. Johns Episcopal Church, Georgtown. Thebest memorial
