The harnessed river furnishes the power necessary to propelthe street cars of the extensive transit system of Baltimore andits suburbs. Power from the Susquehanna moves the trains inthe Belt Line Tunnel of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad,beneath the City of Baltimore, one of the earliest electrically-operated tunnels in the world. The entire power requirementsof the Maryland Electric Railways Company, which operatesthe converted steam road connecting Baltimore with Annapolis,come from the same source. Abundant power at low rates, with an efficient and compre-hensive service, gives Baltimore a tremendous advantage, whichno manufacturer can afford to overlook. 63

After thegreat fire, the City was rebuilt without one strike. Owing toconditions that obtain in no other large community, the capitalistand laborer maintain a status which enables them to operate totheir mutual interest, and to the benefit of the whole industrialsituation. Baltimore seems totally unaffected by those periodic gusts oflabor agitation that sweep over one section of the country oranother, unsettling conditions, causing industrial distress andfinancial loss. The City is exceptionally fortunate in this respect, primarilybecause of natural conditions. The working class is enabled tolive well.
