Description
English: National flag of Turkey and its empire (after 1844)

The flag of Turkey and its empire from 1844. It was flown from Marabout Fort during the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882. It is hand sewn, and made of wool bunting joined horizontally in four widths. The flag is red with a crescent and star applied in white cotton material.

The flag was flown during the action between HMS 'Condor' commanded by Lord Charles William de la Poer Beresford (1846-1919), and Marabout Fort on 11 July 1882. It was hauled down the following day by Captain Arthur Knyvet Wilson (1842-1921) - employed in spiking the guns of the outlying forts. He subsequently presented it to Beresford.
