| Description |
English: The National Geographic Quest anchored off of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) on Barro Colorado Island in the middle of Gatun Lake along the Panama Canal route.
Barro Colorado Island was created in 1914 when the canal route was flooded to create the Panama Canal - it was originally the top of a mountain in the rainforest. STRI was created in 1923 as a permanent research center on the island dedicated to studying the Island's diverse ecosystem which has been little altered in 80 years. The Quest is nearing the end of its cruise and will end up at Colón, Panama tomorrow where we will board it for our cruise back through the canal and towards Costa Rica. |
