Description |
English: A native of Bavaria, Nathan Eckstein arrived in Seattle after 10 years in New York's wholesale grocery business. He married Mina Schwabacher in San Francisco in 1902. Eckstein served as vice president and then chief executive officer of Schwabacher & Company, which grew to become one of Seattle's largest businesses by initially selling groceries and other supplies to miners leaving for the Klondike gold rush. Eckstein also served on the Seattle School Board and was active in local and state civic affairs. Mina Schwabacher Eckstein was active in many Seattle organizations including the Visiting Nurse Service and other health-related societies, the Seattle Community Fund (preceded the United Way), and the Council of Jewish Women. She died in 1942; Nathan died in 1945. The vignette photo on this postcard shows Mina Eckstein, left, Nathan Eckstein, and another woman, dressed for an outing. The postcard was probably a souvenir from Luna Park, an amusement park in West Seattle where visitors could enjoy a carousel, roller coaster, dancing, swimming, drinking, and other pleasures. An inscription next to the photo reads "Luna Park 1907."Caption information source: HistoryLink.org Essay 1644 Caption information source: Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State website: The Schwabacher Family
