e, a beautifulaviary, and a fine well-filled monkey-house : paddocks are being erected on anew plan, which have been laid out with a good deal of taste, so that in avery short time Durban will have added another to its many attractions. Among the animals to be seen are black wildebeestes, hartebeestes,dromedaries, nylgaies, antelopes of great variety, vultures, emus, and otheranimals. The Corporation having taken the matter up in earnest, have votedthe sum of £10,000 as a first instalment to improve the collection, which givean added interest to the town. The committee are most anxious to have firstand foremost a complete collection of South African animals, as many of thesewill soon be extinct, if the various Provincial governments do not put a stopto indiscriminate slaughter. The gardens have already become a great sourceof attraction to visitors and burgesses alike, and it may be assumed the Councilwill continue to adopt a liberal policy in regard to this distinctly educational 94
