ringed with masses offrozen spray, would probably be unrivalled ; and inspring, when the feeding lake is from three to four feethigher than during the summer months, their augmentedvolume would give them an appearance of magnitudewhich is lost when the waters are low, in consequenceof the succession of ledges of rock over which they leapbeing partially screened by the foliage of overhangingtrees. The shoals, rapids, and falls on the Kaministiquia willalways prevent that river from being used as a mean ofcommunication with the interior for commercial purposes.The first large area of open water on this route is DogLake, and with a view to reach that elevated sheet ofwater a road from the shores of Lake Superior in as directa line as possible will be required. About six miles in a north-east by east direction fromFort William, the waters of Current Eiver are seen tofall over a precipitous ledge of black argillaceous slate,of Huronian age, within a few yards of their exit intoThunder Bay,

GREAT DOG LAKE. 43 The valley of this river forms the winter route of theIndians from Thunder Bay to Great Dog Lake, and whilethe Great Dog Portage, by the circuitous route of theKaministiquia, is not less than 43 miles from Fort Wil-liam, Great Dog Lake is reached by the Valley of CurrentEiver, in an eighteen or twenty miles march from Thun-der Bay. In making their winter journey to Great Dog Lake, theIndians generally proceed from the Mission in the neigh-bourhood of Fort William to the mouth of Current Eiver,and ascend its open and unencumbered course, reachingDog Lake in one day from Fort William. A cursoryinspection of the map will show that the direct line ofroute from Fort William, or rather from Point Meuron,through the forest, if a track were cleared, would saveseveral miles.* The height of Great Dog Lake above Lake Superior is710 feet, and to reach it in canoes or boats by the routeof the Kaministiquia involves portages, which in theaggregate amount to 325 chains, or four mi
