The first attempt to found a colony in the country nowoccupied by the Bed Eiver settlements was made in theyear 1812, under the patronage of Lord Selkirk. A largetract of country, extending from the sources of the Win-nipeg to Lake Winnipego-sis*5 and stretching from LakeWinnipeg far beyond the United States boundary, waspurchased from the Hudson Bay Company by Lord Sel-kirk in 1811, for the establishment of his contemplatedcolony. The colonists consisted of several Scotch fami-lies, who, after they had reached the spot which was tobe their future home, were met by a large party of half-breeds and Indians in the service of the North-WestCompany, and warned not to attempt to establish a per-manent settlement. They were conducted by a number * uWinnipego-sis/ Little Winnipeg. The affix sis signifies in Cree little.

FIRST SETTLEMENT OF RED RIVER. 173 of these wild and reckless children of the prairies to FortPembina, a post of the Hudson Bay Company, wherethey passed the winter in buffalo-skin tents, and soonadopted the habits of life belonging to the savage andhalf-savage natives by whom they were surrounded. InMay, 1813, the emigrants returned to the neighbourhoodof Fort Douglas, about two miles below the present site ofFort Garry, and here commenced their agricultural labours.In the fall of the year they again sought refuge at FortPembina, and after a winter of much suffering, revisited,in the spring of 1814, the scene of the previous yearsattempt to plant themselves on the banks of EedEiver, with a determination to make it a permanent rest-ing-place.
