It isjudiciously built in the castellated style, andwears the appearance of a drawbridge to thefortress, whilst the town on the left, and the riveropening to the sea in the distance, in conjunctionform a coup-dceil peculiarly imposing. Thisbridge supersedes the dangerous ferry, which for-merly existed here over the Conway. The firststone was laid in the spring of 1822, and it wasopened to the public in the summer of 1826.The embankment, connected with it, is a stu-pendous structure, and is formed of hard clayfaced with stone. The length of the bridge,between the centres of the supporting towers, is327 feet. The length of the embankment, be-tween the island and the eastern shore, is 2015feet, its breadth at the top being 30 feet, and itsextreme width, at the base, 300 feet, where theembankment is highest.
