earerSt. Asaph is Bodlewyddan, Sir J. Williams, baro-net. The entire distance of seven miles betweenAbergeley and St. Asaph, abounds in beautifulscenery. On the left the town of Rhuddlan, withthe ruins of its ancient castle, is often conspicuous.It is situated on the banks of the Clwyd, and inthe celebrated marsh to which it gives its name.Here was fought the battle between Offa and theWelsh, under Carradoc, in 795, and according tothe opinion of some, it was upon this occasion thatthe exquisitely plaintive Welsh air of MorfaRhuddlan was composed. Edward the first spentmuch of his time at this castle, during his warfarewith the Welsh princes, and he kept his Christ-mas here upon three subsequent occasions. Oneof Queen Eleanors daughters was born in thecastle, and Richard the Second dined here on hisway to Flint. Here also David, the brother ofLlewellyn, was sent upon his capture, and thenremoved to Shrewsbury where he was executed.The fortress was dismantled by General Myttonin 1646 :
