ualtalent, and we accordingly descended to the bridgefor that end. The thought of a bridge over the Menai straithad been meditated during a long period, andplans had, for several years previous to a finaldecision upon this important subject, been sub-mitted to a committee of the House of Commons.At length in 1818, a new plan, on the suspensionprinciple, was presented by that distinguishedengineer Mr. Telford. This model was highlyapproved, and the work was commenced in May1819. The general opening of the bridge tookplace on the 30th January 1826, the HolyheadMail, attended by a numerous retinue of carriages,horsemen, flags &c. passing over it, amidst theacclamations of the multitude, assembled to wit-ness this interesting and important event. Thebridge is placed at the narrowest part of the strait,and now forms the chief means of communicationwith Anglesea. There are four arches on theAnglesea side, and on the Caernarvon three, con-necting the land with the two main piers. It con-

At each end of thebridge is an elegant toll-house, and on the Bangorside of the strait there is an inn. The mode inwhich the chains are fastened to the rock, may beinspected by application at the toll-house on theAnglesea side, the cavern being kept locked up;and having procured lights, I availed myself ofthis permission. The best view of the bridge is atthe foot of the steep bank, below this toll-house.Here the arches, between the main pier and theland assume a gigantic appearance. The chiefdimensions and properties of the bridge are asfollow : Height of the two main piers from high waterline to the road way, 100 feet. Height of thepiers from the roadway to the top, 53 feet.
