When I awoke I found that mylabor of yesterday had been rewarded by a beautiful littlespring, which during the night had become full of clearcold water. I took a delicious draught of it and thenwashed myself and sat down to eat the slim remnants ofmy beef tongue and bread. I now bethought me that adesperate attempt must be made to get out of the moun-tains, otherwise, my provisions being exhausted, I shouldhave only escaped death by thirst to perish by starvation.Accordingly, I cut two long slim poles with my knife,and tying them across each other firmly, with a piece of myhandkerchief, I made a cross and hung it on a small leaflesstree that stood near the spot, so that in the event anyother poor hunted fugitive should find himself lost anddying in those mountains, he might see by the cross that 128 NARRATIVE OF EDT7ARD MCGOWAN.

I cut the initials of myname on the tree on which I had hung the cross, christen-ed the place St. Peters Spring, and commenced mydoubtful attempt to get out of the mountain. After partlywalking and partly crawling on my hands and knees throughthe chapparal, for nearly two hours, I heard a distantsound like the falling of water. I immediately turned inthe direction from which the sound came, and in abouttwenty minutes more, during which I was continually de-scending into a canon, I came to a large mountain streamI looked up it and the scene was very picturesque. Itcame roaring and dashing on for some distance above me,between two bold and rugged walls of rock, leaping fromcrag to crag in a succession of beautiful cascades, keepingcontinually wet with their glittering spray the leaves of thebushes that overhung
