Into this hole he inserted one end of the roundstick, and then rolled it back and forth between his handsuntil the friction produced fire. The sticks have to be ofa peculiar kind of wood, which he pointed out to me. Itried the experiment and succeeded. I contented myself with breakfasting upon the musselsraw, and enjoyed them pretty well. The tide not being farenough out when I visited the shore, I had not been ableto gather many of them, and ate all that I had for break-fast. Toward the middle of the day, I again felt hungry,and resolved to tr) the raw turtle meat which I had putinto the stream in my shirt to keep it fresh. I found, how-ever, that it was too unpalatable.
