I did not go near the house, notknowing who might be about the premisses, but crept steal-thily down to the seashore and gathered a cjuantity of mus-sels, which I put into my shirt, and carried back to themountains. I also stopped and got over the fence into theDoctors garden and pulled up some potatoes which I car-ried with me, thinking that I might by some chance get fireand cook thehi. Toward the middle of the day, I again felt hungry, and resolved to tr) the raw turtle meat which I had putinto the stream in my shirt to keep it fresh. I found, how-ever, that it was too unpalatable. I was not quite hungryenough to get it down. Knowing, however, that if it oncegot into my stomach it would be nutritious and strengthen-ing to me, I tried
