Happily his English nurse,Miss Shaw, whom he dearly loved, treated him withEnglish good sense, and had an excellent influenceover him. Others were also to be found who didnot consider that they were bound to worship theEmperors heir. On one occasion he childishly failed in due de-corum toward the Due de Tascher, who took himsharply to task, pointing out in very plain termsthe superiority of a man of his age and positionover a gamin like himself. The little Prince was spoiled to excess byhis father; his mother naturally wished to coun-terbalance the latters over-indulgence, but she wasnot always judicious in her energetic interference.One instance may be quoted among many. Thevery first time that the little Prince was seated ona pony as a mere baby of three years old, theequerry, M. Bachon, was carefully holding him, andleading the pony step by step, when suddenly theEmpress came up, indignantly declaring that shewould not have such absurd petting, concludingwith a cut of her whip to the pony, who startedoff. Bachon, terrified, uttered an energetic exple-tive, succeeded in stopping the pony, and broughtback the child unhurt; but he was too angry toremember official decorum, and expressed his feel-ings with an amount of vigor very unusual incourts, while the English nurse indulged in morerespectful lamentations: Oh! your Majesty!
