Description
  • Scope and content: This file unit consists of correspondence related to Nantucket (Great Point) Light received by Henry A. S. Dearborn in his capacity as Superintendent of Massachusetts Lighthouses. Included are construction proposals and correspondence related to the rebuilding of the lighthouse and keeper’s house following an 1816 fire, as well as several letters relating to the extinguishing of the light during the War of 1812. Correspondents include Revenue Commissioner Samuel Smith, contractor and lamp-maker Winslow Lewis, and Lighthouse Keepers Jonathan Coffin, George Swain, and George Bunker.
