satisfaction. I do just lovesecrets and mysteries ! When youre in them/ amended Jane, whowas also trying on her jumper. I really oughtto have put my letters up on that shoulder seam. Its most frightfully crooked. Speaking of mysteries/ said Nancy, theresone that were not in. At least Im not. Doeither of you happen to know why Plain MarySmith is so anxious to grow thin ? Is she? demanded Jane, pulling at the of-fending shoulder seam. I should think she might very easily be, saidChristina, standing on tiptoe to pull too. But she never used to care a bit how shelooked, persisted Nancy. Shes growing older and wiser, suggested Jane. Shes not much older and wiser than she wasthe last week of last term, when she ate half afruit-cake and pounds of candy out of AngelicaRansoms birthday box. Now she wont so muchas touch candy or desserts or cake.: Really ? Jane was getting interested. Thats certainly going some for a lady withPlain Marys sweet tooth. Wont she tell whyshe wants to grow thin ? 48

l DO JUST LOVE SECRETS AND MYSTERIES )U IN U WOODLAND WANDERERS Nancy shook her head. Just says she hatesto look like a barrel. And the next question/ murmured Jane, is:why has she so suddenly acquired a distaste forlooking like a barrel? Well investigate themystery of Mary at once/3 As Nancy opened her own door, she suddenlyremembered that W. W. was a secret, and tuckedaway the feature carefully out of sight in thefolds of her jumper, doing it with a guilty feelingbecause she knew that Grace would resent beingleft out of the new Order. For the present Grace was in a very amiablemood. Ive been down to order a riding skirt, she explained to Nancy. Miss Button chap-eroned us, and we had lots of fun. Why didntyou come too, Nancy ? Im not going to have a skirt made, Nancytold her. Mother promised to send me a ready-made linen one. She said that would be plentygood enough until I was sure of riding regularly. I shall ride at home this summer, if I like itas well as I expect to, said Grace.
