Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Namur

The Église Saint-Loup is a Roman Catholic church in Namur. This church is part of the "Patrimoine majeur de Wallonie". It is one of the most important baroque churches in Belgium and was built between 1621 and 1645 by the Jesuits. Initially it was called Église Saint-Ignace, and she served the adjacent Jesuit college. Today this church is also used for concerts in addition to worship.

Architect Huyssens had planned a bell tower for his baroque church, at the end of the choir, behind the apse. But in 1645, eight years after his death, this tower was no higher than the nave, and it was never raised to its intended height.

The facade is built in the Dutch Baroque style, with the Gesù Church in Rome to a lesser extent - but especially the Sint-Carolus-Borromeüskerk in Antwerp serving as an example. The facade with three subdivisions is particularly graceful. Between 1864 and 1867, the building underwent a major restoration and the façade was rebuilt in bluestone, replacing the original black marble that could not withstand the test of time in open air. Classic structured lines, interspersed with ornamentation and Baroque additions, give the front a cohesive balance without a sense of excess. In the top corner of the pediment -above the entrance door- is a putto, accompanied by a chronogram in medallion with number 1867, which refers to the end of the restoration. The chronogram reads as follows: "NamVrCI DeCVs aC gLorIa resVrgo" which means: "Names in Honor and Glory Resurrected".
