Nail cleaners |

Description |
English: A possible Roman nail cleaner fragment, measuring 20mm in surviving length and 9.9mm in width at its widest point. This possible nail cleaner has been cast in one and half of the suspension loop and the top fragment of the leaf shaped shaft now survive, the rest of it is missing due to very old breaks which are now extremely worn. The suspension loop measures c8mm in diameter externally and c6mm in internal diameter. Below this the shaft is waisted and traces of transverse moulded decoration can be seen. The shaft then flares outwards, with low sloping shoulders. This possible nail cleaner is similar to one from Hatcheston, Suffolk in its size, shape and design. It would also possibly fit into Crummys' type 1a, with a suspension loop on the same plane as the shaft, which she dates from the mid-1st century to early 2nd century AD, however, this type has a simple shaft and in this example the shaft is slightly wider and more leaf shaped than Crummys' examples and also has the decorative moulding of her later types (Crummy 1983, 57-58). |
