Title
nail cleaner
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy nail cleaner of Roman date. The blade is flat and leaf-shaped in form, tapering towards a bifuricated tip. It is decorated on both faces with an incised border and has extensive visible tool marks. At the top of the blade is the suspension loop, which is set at right angles to the plane of the blade and has a single circular aperture. This object measures 40.79mm in length, 10.42mm in width at plate, 0.85mm in thickness, and weighs 1.92g.

This is a cosmetic nail cleaner of Roman date. The use of a leaf shaped blade with moulded suspension loop indicates it belongs in Crummy's Type 2a nail cleaners (Crummy, 1983: pp. 58, no. 1872) with parallels from Hacheston (Blagg et al., 2004: nos. 91-92). These indicate a date range in the 1st to 2nd centuries for the current example.
