Title
Nail Cleaner
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy cosmetic implement, probably a nail cleaner of Roman date. The top and bottom of the object are missing due to old breaks. It has a flat leaf-shaped plate or blade that tapers towards old breaks at the base. This is decorated on the front face with a central incised vertical groove and has been folded forwards due to post-depositional damage. At the top the object narrows to a rectangular neck or stem that is oval sectioned and preserves the base of the now incomplete suspension loop. The surfaces of this object have a dark green patina with extensive pitting and signs of corrosive copper-alloy products. It measures 42.40mm in length, 5.44mm in width, 2.47mm in thickness, and weighs 1.55g.

This is a Roman cosmetic nail cleaner, probably belonging to Crummy's Type 2a group (Crummy, 1983: p. 58) with similar examples noted from Roman Hacheston (Blagg et al., 2002: nos. 91-92). This group is dated to the mid-1st to 2nd centuries AD.
