Description
English: McCauley Private Hospital (1923)

Raleigh native Lewyn Eugene McCauley (1883-1962) graduated from Shaw University’s Leonard Medical School in 1905. Following several years in private practice, Dr. McCauley established a 12-bed hospital for African Americans in a former residence on South Wilmington Street in 1923. Under Dr. McCauley’s direction, the facility served the African American community for nearly 30 years. The hospital closed in 1952, but Dr. McCauley maintained his physician’s office in the building until his death in 1962. It was demolished in the 1960s.
