Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Tupper Memorial Baptist Church (1912)

In 1866 Union Army chaplain Henry Martin Tupper, founder of Shaw University, purchased a lot at Blount and Cabarrus Streets and built a two-story, frame building that housed the church on the first floor and his school on the second (the Raleigh Theological Institute, which later became Shaw University). It was known as Second Baptist Church.
The original building was demolished in 1912. A new church was erected on the site and renamed Blount Street Baptist. The vernacular Neo-Gothic building featured double towers, with a corner bell tower serving as the principal entry, a gable end facing the street, and stained-glass Gothic-arched windows.
In 1940, the church name was changed to Tupper Memorial Baptist to honor its founder and first pastor. The building underwent extensive remodeling in 1957. The exterior was faced with brick veneer, the towers truncated, and the Gothic windows replaced by Roman-arch versions. The 1912 hand-carved pews were retained and are still used today.
Designated a Raleigh Historic Landmark, Tupper Memorial Church is on the National Register of Historic Places.
