DescriptionNYCSub ExpJoint.jpg | Subway track diagonal expansion joint (breather switch) on the Williamsburg Bridge. Due to thermal contraction and expansion each bridge changes its length over the seasons. This joint allows the tracks to give way avoiding stress buildup and deformation. Misalignment of the abrasion marks indicates that the image shows the bridge in a contracted state, which is consistent with the cold winter temperatures at the time the photo was taken.
