Description

With NSF support, the National Center for Atmospheric Research’s (NCAR) Colorado facility is home to HIAPER, one of the worlds’ most advanced research aircraft. The High-performance Instrumented Airborne Platform for Environmental Research is a modified Gulfstream V airplane that can carry 5,600 pounds of sensing equipment and fly at an altitude of 51,000 feet. The plane has a range of 7,000 miles. Since its debut in 2005, HIAPER has been at the forefront of environmental research. Pictured above, some of the scientific equipment HIAPER carries on research flights. Learn more about HIAPER and recent research at www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=130068 .
