Summary

[edit]
Description This modern day photo in the Bob Marshall Wilderness shows the roughly 100-year-old practice of hanging #9 phone line on a tree for hand-crank telephone communications. The Bob Marshall Wilderness has over 40 miles of working phone lines between cabins and trees that are available for use by employees and the public, if necessary. In this photo, a seasonal employee named Joe is hanging the line on a tree deep in the Wilderness that had been knocked down by an adjacent fallen tree. This image has the viewer questioning whether this photo is from 2009 or 1929 because the scene would be the same now as then except for the fact that Joe is wearing a hard hat. This historic system is part of what makes the Bob Marshall a unique Wilderness. U.S. Forest Service photo by Libby Langston.
