Description
English: Propagandistic photo report of the Norwegian SS students at the "SS School" in Elverum in German-occupied Norway during the summer (probably May-June) of 1941. Students in training at Terningmoen military camp.
  • The Norwegian SS (Norwegian: Norges SS) was a Norwegian branch of the German Schutzstaffel (SS), established on May 21, 1941. It originated from Hirdregiment 7, Oslo’s division of Hirden, forming a guard for Vidkun Quisling, the leader of the Norwegian fascist party, Nasjonal Samling (NS), before and during World War II. Nearly 150 members from Rikshirden joined under Police Minister Jonas Lie's leadership. Members trained in Elverum under German SS officers and received German SS uniforms with Hirden insignia.
After Germany's attack on the Soviet Union in June 1941, 136 members of Norges SS volunteered for the Norwegian Legion, a battalion in the Waffen-SS. On July 21, 1942, the unit was renamed Germanske SS Norge, absorbing remaining members of Norges SS. Heinrich Himmler supported its establishment, which aimed to diminish Quisling's influence.
