Description

New Orleans in 1803.

This is a section from the work "Under My Wings Every Thing Prospers" by New Orleans artist J. L. Bouqueto de Woiseri, to celebrate his pleasure with the Louisiana Purchase and his expectation that economic prosperity would result under U.S. administration.

This section of the panorama is of the lower section to the right of center. View is from Marigny near the riverfront lookinng up river and inland. In the foreground cows graze on the Marigny plantation, not yet subdivided for development. Logs and lumber are stacked near the sawmill, with a section of the Marigny logging canal visible. Beyond is the city proper (now the French Quarter), with buildings along the lake side of Levee Street (now Decatur), and the St. Louis Cathedral seen in distance with the old rounded cupolas before the more familiar pointed spires replaced them a few decades later. The new flag of the USA flys on a pole.

I have been unable to find a full reproduction of the work in color on line. The intermediate web source listed below seems to be a scan of this public domain work from a book where it is only reproduced in part and the cetner is lost in the book fold.
