Description PLUMBBOB (1957) NEVADA TEST SITE - Two sets of five doors formed of standard commercial materials were tested by the Federal Civil Defense Administration during a recent atomic test. At a high pressure range, all but one of the doors satisfactorily withstood the blast. One door was ripped out of its fame, and the surface of all of them was scorched and blackened by the thermal wave. From left to right, the doors are: (1) A solid plywood door; (2) A wood plank door made of a single layer of horizontal 2-inch x 4-inch lumber; (3) Cellular steel door formed of commercial sheet steel Q-panels set in and welded to a rolled steel channel frame; (4) A hollow plywood door which was blown out of its frame into the test shell; and (5) A steel plate door fabricated by welding an outer panel of one-quarter-inch thick steel plate and an inner cover of 20-gauge steel to a steel angle frame stiffened with horizontal steel T-bars. Hardware and framing for all doors at this range stood up to the force of the blast. Objects on the wall of the building are installations for testing three anti-blast valves for shelter ventilation openings. Pressure gauges on the front of the test assembly have been removed.
