Description PLUMBBOB/SHOT BALLOON - January 30, 1957 - NEVADA TEST SITE -- The photograph was made at a firing area in Yucca Flat, Nevada Test Site, the morning of 1/30/57, as Nevada Test Organization and Sandia Lab personnel began a series of experiments to determine if anchored balloons may be used as detonation platforms for full-scale nuclear tests. The tube-like extension at the balloon (lower right) is used to inflate it with helium.
