| Description | On 29 Oct 1814, the first steam-powered U.S. Navy warship, Fulton, was launched at New York City. Commissioned in June 1816, she carried President James Monroe on a day cruise in New York Harbor a year later. For her career, she was either laid up or, after 1825, employed as a floating barracks. In June 1829, Fulton was destroyed by a gunpowder explosion. Steam Battery "Fulton" (1814). Launching, at New York City, 29 October 1814. Engraving published by B. Tanner, No. 71 South 3rd.
