Summary

[edit]
Description

A pretty barred spiral galaxy in the direction of Virgo. What I find interesting about this galaxy is the shape of its core. It appears to be macaroni-shaped. While I am by no means an expert on galactic nuclei or more generally galaxies, I do feel that I have seen enough of them to state that it's at least a little weird.

Usually with near-infrared Hubble imagery I can spot a point-like nucleus or at least a generally round, if diffuse, shape in the center of spiral galaxies. I'm not sure if the true nucleus is deeply obscured by dust that near-infrared light is unable to penetrate, or if the nucleus is indeed the bright, deformed bar. I'll be sure to look out for more like this to see if it really is an oddball.

I think there is a good chance I jumped the gun in processing this image, and that further observations will be taken later, making for a higher quality image and making it easier to fill the chip gap. I really wanted to see what it looked like, though... I can't help myself.

This image was creating using data from Adam Riess's amazing proposal that is chock-full of galaxies. The Hubble Constant to 1%: Physics beyond LambdaCDM

I also used a bit of older WFPC2 data to fill in the chip gap, which crossed the center of the image.

North is NOT up. It is 25.00° counter-clockwise from up.
