Title
NCL-B56E31: A copper-alloy buckle of late Saxon date.
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy single loop buckle of 9th-11th century date.

The frame is D-shaped in plan, with a decorated outer frame consisting of a vinescroll motif on the upper face only. The outer edge of the outer frame has a beaded border.

The pin is formed of a single flattened strip that tapers outward from a point that falls short of the outer frame. The other end hooks over the bar to form a simple hinge. The bar is very thin and worn.

This buckle is a Marshall Late Saxon type 1B (fig. 4, no. 5).

This object was found by divers in the River Tyne downstream from the Roman bridge at Corbridge.
