Title |
NCL-B552A4: A late Saxon copper-alloy buckle of 9-11 century date. |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper-alloy single-looped buckle frame with ornate outer edge, of 12th-14th century date. The frame is sub-circular in plan, with a decorated outer edge consisting of a lower and upper projecting knop separated by a thickening of the frame with 2 ridges and 3 furrows set transversely. The pin is formed of a single piece of wire with a flat terminal that extends beyond the outer frame and the other end hooks over the bar to form a simple hinge. Pressure on the pin from use has caused the pin to bend inward. This buckle is similar to several from 12th- to 14th-century contexts in London (e.g. Egan and Pritchard 1991, no. 299). It was found by divers in the River Tyne downstream from the Roman bridge at Corbridge. |
