This is one of the two covered bridges that are here. Irish River #1 Vaughan Creek 1935 Known as the Vaughan Creek Bridge, this covered bridge spans Vaughan Creek, just metres inland from the Bay of Fundy. It is in a list of covered bridges in New Brunswick as Irish River Bridge #1. It is immediately east of the town of St. Martins. on the Big Salmon River Road. This has been the only bridge over Vaughan Creek on Big Salmon River Road since its construction in 1935. Though it wears no paint, the bridge is still in pretty good condition Built in 1935, the bridge has a length of 21.8 meters (71ft 6in) and a wood plank road bed. A temporary one-lane steel bridge has been in place for several years after the older covered bridge was deemed to be no longer able to carry heavy vehicle traffic. The purpose of the covering is to protect the wooden structural members from the weather. |
