Summary

[edit]
Description
English: VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (Feb. 19, 2015) Anthony Smith (2nd from left) and his Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC) design team receive the Society of American Military Engineers (S.A.M.E.) Project of the Year award during a Ventura & Santa Barbara Counties National Engineers Week banquet at the Reagan Library. The team, in conjunction with specialized contractors, developed the Advanced eXpendable Doppler Penetrometer (ADXP), a geotechnical tool that measures properties of the seafloor through deceleration of a probe impacting the seafloor after deployment from a vessel. The project integrated high resolution accelerometers and digital acoustic data transmission, eliminating the need for trailing wires, improving the signal to noise ratio, increasing sensitivity to allow use in softer soils, and increasing the depth range to 10,000 feet from 4,500 feet allowed by the earlier probe. This new system will save $400,000 per year while improving data quality and expanding the operational range. From left to right: Scott Moken, Anthony Smith, Robert Pietsch, Matt Grant and Capt. Mark Edelson, NAVFAC EXWC commanding officer and S.A.M.E. Post president. (Photo by David Patton)
