Please note, this is a camera phone video - we'll have a high def one coming out soon. This video shows the NASA Goddard High Capacity Centrifuge (HCC). It is doing a test spin with the James Webb Space Telescope's flight ISIM structure aboard. The ISIM structure will hold all the science instruments. The HCC's top speed: 33 1/3 rpm (just like the record speed if anyone remembers that); it generates 30 G's at that speed. ISIM test top speed: about 11 rpm for about 10 Gs (same as it will experience on the Ariane 5 rocket during launch) The ISIM test in this video wasn't even 1 G. It was about 1/3 rpm. It was done to test the balance of the centrifuge. Credit: Mike McClare |
