Title
NARC-7DEE07 : Nail Cleaner : Roman
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy Nail Cleaner of Roman date (AD 43-150). The object is composed of a partially retained, circular suspension loop, set at 90 degrees to the body of the object. The suspension loop then joins the leaf-shaped body of the nail cleaner via a sub-circular shaft, which ends in a narrow bifurcate terminal with the two ends flaring slightly outwards. The object is decorated with a repeating incised linear pattern, comprising a short, transverse chevron at either side of the shaft.

The metal is a dark brown in colour with a predominantly smooth and uncorroded patina. A minor amount of corrosion is evident on the lower portion of the object in the form of green corrosion product.

The nail cleaner is probably Crummy Type 2a, Crummy, N, 1983, Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman small finds from excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust Ltd, Colchester p58, fig 62, no 1872.
