Title |
NARC-4BDA95 acheulian handaxe |
||
Description |
English: A complete Neolithic adze (2700 BC - 2200 BC).
The adze is bi-facially worked and sub-triangular in plan, with slightly concave sides. There are multiple flaking scars on both the dorsal and ventral sides. There is approximately 5% cortex still remaining on the upper face and narrow edge. The upper face of the object has a light grey colour, and a mottled dark grey colouring on the flatter underside. The condition of the flint is excellent, and is only slightly worn. The edges are still sharp. A similar artefact can be viewed at SUSS-275044. Recorded by Stephanie Smith, this tool is similar to 'Acheulian' handaxes of the Lower Palaeolithic, in that it is bifacially worked and roughly piriform in plan; however, its finely worked sub-oval cutting edge and elongated form, coupled with its asymmetrically bi-convex cross-section suggests a Neolithic date. Similar to adzes from the Neolithic period, this tool has one 'humped' or arched face with a flatter, albeit worked, opposite face. Dr Kevin Leahy comments: "Its asymmetry shows it to be, not an axe, but an adze and the presence of cortex around the point indicates that this was not the (functional) end. Adzes like these have been placed with Mesolithic TRANCHET AXEHEADs although they are atypical and lack a tranchet sharpening. My own feeling is that they belong with the rough flint work that we seen at the end of the Neolithic". (pers. comm. 3 June 2014). |
